Canada Day Hours!

The Comic Hunter will be open on Canada, although I'll be opening a little later.

12pm-9pm

Board Game Night will be on as usual, starting at 5:45pm!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 9-10

Week 9 was pretty slim, having taken the weekend off for Cat's birthday, and spending a lot of time with her and whatnot, so I just merged it with Week 10.

Amazing Spider-Man: Shed wrapped up this week, and it was seriously one of the best ASM stories since the reboot with One More Day. Anyone who isn't reading this book should really look into it, cause it is consistently one of the best reads going.

Decided to catch up on Superman and Hulk, as a I was at least a couple months behind on their big events.

Fall of Hulks ended up being a bit better than I though, but still kind of pointless. Lots of explosions and double crosses, as if they're trying to mix the old style "Hulk Smash" with Bruce Jones' more intelligent run, and throwing in "Hulked-Out Heroes" just to sell a few extra books. The whole things seem a little much, but wasn't that bad in the end.

Superman's Last Stand and War of the Supermen was lots of fun, and wrapped up the story that they'd be working on for a few years now. Maybe a little too nicely, if I had one complaint. Other than Clark/Kal being "a little" depressed about the ending, it's more or less back to the status-quo. We'll see where JMS goes with the back I guess. Also very excited for Paul Cornell writing Action Comics, and seemingly turning it into a Lex Luthor book!

New Avengers started out strong, looking forward to what they're going to do with that!

Young Allies and Avengers Academy were two books I didn't expect much from, but both were pretty solid. A good light read from Young Allies, and a surprising twist for Avengers Academy!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 8

And for the first time since Week 1, and setting a new weekly record, I actually got MORE read than what I needed! OH MAH GODS!

I've been getting the Wildstorm World's End stuff since Wildstorm: Armageddon and the Number of the Beast mini series, but being overloaded like I am, most of those got put to the side. Sometime last week I decided I was in the mood to read some Authority, and that snowballed into me attempting to catch up with two years of Wildstorm Universe books! I've off to a decent start, but I've still got a fair stack ahead of me! We'll see what tomorrow brings! :)

Also read Alex Ross and Jim Krueger's most recent Marvel adventures: Avengers/Invaders, and it's sequel, The Torch, which just wrapped up.

They were pretty solid, a little typical of Ross and Kruegers work together, interested plot ideas, medium to good executions, quasi-classic story telling style. I'm always excited to see what they're going to do, because it won't read like anything else out there, but I'm never blown away. That being said, this fall will see their next project, The Invaders, come to fruition, and I'll be getting that too!

Last big thing I want to mention is Irredeemable and Incorruptible! I've been impatiently waiting for the TPBs for this, and finally snapped and grabbed the issues passed what I had in the three volumes that are out already. Great series, both of them! Can't recommend them enough, a good crossover for those who love super-hero books, or most alternative comics!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 7

I've decided to stop tracking it by day, and just stick to the weeks. I was getting myself totally mixed up trying to figure out what I read on what day! Obviously I get a lot more done early in the when I'm off, and often a stack on Wednesday on new comic day!

I managed to read I Kill Giants this week! I had read the first couple of issues when it came out, and it seemed like a lot of fun, but hadn't gotten around to finishing it till now. One of the best "young adult" stories out there, highly recommend this to anyone of any age group who has gone through any kind of "tough family situation". It was quite a touching story, but Joe Casey keeps its fun enough that it never gets too cheesy.

I also sat and read all of Phil Hester's Anchor. I was a little sad to see that #8 was the last issue in the series, due to poor sales, but he was at least able to finish up the main story that he wanted to tell, as he'd originally planned it for a mini series, but Book pushed him to make it ongoing. In the end, it was a fun story, recommended for anyone who has enjoying any of his Image work, or any of Kirkman's extended Invincible universe (of which, Hester's Firebreather, is a part of).

Quite enjoying DV8 up until now. Brian Wood is taking a 90s Wildstorm team, and completely changing all the rules/settings for a team book. Very "gender neutral" too. I would recommend this to my wife, where I wouldn't bother telling her to read Dark Avengers or Thunderbolts (the "other" different team books). :-P

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 6

Sorry I'm so late posting this, I guess I need to do Week 7 while I'm at it! It's been one of those weeks I guess. The Diamond Order was due, so hopefully everyone got their May orders in! Also, we had a VERY successful Mox Legacy tournament this weekend with 41 players showing up! Congrats to Rob Bull for taking the Mox!

As far as my readings go, big standout this week was the Obergeist HC, which I quite enjoyed. Sci-fi meets Supernatural via Nazis! Always entertaining :-P

I also got through Ed Brubaker's Marvels Project, while not being what I expected, was perfectly a paced, brilliantly drawn look at the dawn of the marvel universe!

Batman: Streets of Gotham is still great, and I'm happy I took the time to catch up on that!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 5

Wooo, I'm not very good at this game! Oh well, at least I got some pretty decent reading done this week!

Caught up on my Secret Warriors, read all of Bendis/Maleev's Spider-Woman, which was amazing, and while I'm pretty sad to see it go, I'm very excited about their upcoming Scarlet title!

I was able to read Brave and the Bold #33, and while we're sold out at The Comic Hunter, if you get a chance to read this, DO NOT pass it up!

The end of Siege came out this week, as well as it's sister title, Siege: Embedded. Both were pretty solid reads throughout, although we were also forced to read Siege: The Fallen, which while I have no problems with them killing off the character they did (as much as I enjoyed him), this issue read nothing like what it should have been for this character. It was a little ... whatever the pc-way to say retarded is...

Dark Avengers also finished up, and was easily one of the best 16 issues ever published in a row by Marvel. Check it out if you haven't yet!

It was nice to see Giffen and DeMatteis‎ back doing what they do best, Booster Gold (on two books), Max Lord and the JLI!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 4

Almost kept up this week, but still falling behind. I managed to snag a copy of the Orbiter graphic novel by Warren Ellis, which I didn't know existed. Solid read, nothing too exciting, but a good science-fiction storyline set in the near future.

Still keeping up with Siege and Second Coming, both have been great reads! Brightest Day is also starting off well enough. They're obviously setting it up to be a year long event, and are taking their time to get a lot of story out of it!

Incorruptible Vol. 1 finally came out, and I was more than happy to devourer that one in a sitting! Highly recommend this one, and Mark Waid's sister title, Irredeemable, if you want some good alternative super-hero books!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 3

Seems keeping the reading level up is going to be harder than I'd originally planned! Not too sure I'm going to reach my goal of 3000 books in a year, but I'm going to keep at it and see what I get to!

This weekend was FCBD, which was our most successful yet! I can't even begin to count how many people came through our doors, but if our numbers reflect our sales, it's nearly twice as many as last year's!

My brother René was down visiting, and helping out with FCBD, and if all goes well, you'll all be getting to know him soon enough, as he may become the next Comic Hunter employee!

All this to say, little time to read, so here we go, week three!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 2

Alright... off to a bad a start! Week 2 was pretty rough for any kind of reading, but in all honesty, between running a large magic event, driving back to my parents (3 hour drive) to help my brother move, then driving back down less than 24 hours later to spend my two days off working on the monthly comic order... my spare time was pretty short!

But here it is, week 2!

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 1

Having fallen behind on some reading over the last couple of years, I've put myself to the task of reading 3000 comics in the next year. I wish I could have thought about this on something like the first of the month, but unfortunately, April 12th falls as the first day of the count!

This should give me a good run on catching up everything I need to read + keep up with everything coming out! Obviously, if I read a TPB, I'll count the issues. If it's an original graphic novel, every 22 pages will one issue, as is the average story content in a regular comic!

So, here it is, week 1!

The Wry’s Rants for Apr 7 released comics

Howdy and/or doody, and welcome back to The Wry’s rants! This week we’ll look at 5 different titles. There’s World War Hulks #1, Deadpool Corps #1, The Flash Secret Files #1, S.H.I.E.L.D. #1, and Cable #1, er… #25. (sorry, didn’t realize how many #1 issues I’d be covering) No rant this week as nothing came out that made me want to vent. Maybe next time.

World War Hulks #1
This one-shot issue has a heart-stopping six (that’s right, SIX) stories in it. Mind you, they’re only 8 pages each, and none of them really need to be read to follow the Hulk storyline, but six stories! That’s like six second features with no main feature! (actually, that’s exactly what it is) We have an A-Bomb story by Jeff Parker and Zach Howard (which was okay), a Glenn Talbot (??) story by Harrison Wilcox and Ben Oliver (which wasn’t necessary), a Cosmic Hulk story by Scott Reed and Aluir Amancio (which REALLY wasn’t necessary). Also there’s a Samson story by Paul Tobin and Ramon Rosanas (which I liked), a Red She-Hulk story Harrison Wilcox and Ryan Stegman (which was okay) and finally a Deadpool story by Jeff Parker and Iguana, er… Ig Guara (sorry).
Overall, a solid ‘meh’. Nothing offensive about it, but not mandatory reading if you want to follow what’s going on in Hulk.

Deadpool Corps #1
Speaking of a Deadpool story, here’s Deadpool Corps # 1 by Victor Gischler and Rob Liefeld. This picks up where the prelude story left off, with the Deadpools currently in space with Comtemplator (sounds like the name of a Decepticon). He tells the ‘pools of this sentient negative energy space thingy and that they have to go stop it. Along the way they run across The Champion (that’s right, THE Champion) and fun and chaos ensues.
But wait, there’s more! There’s also a back-up story by Frank Tieri (Yay! He’s like the best villain writer ever) and Matteo Scalera that gives a nice little summary of Deadpool’s psyche (as bizarre as it is). Overall this issue is okay, having Deadpool in space is an interesting change, although I don’t know how well this will turn out in the end.

The Flash Secret Files #1
The issue is basically two parts, a Barry Allen Flash story (by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins) and then the Secret Files. Since Johns and Kolins did this, you know the rogues would be in it (and they are at the end). Basically the entire issue, secret files and all, is setup to give people an intro into the Flash in case they were planning on getting the ongoing series. At this I think they did a pretty good job. Anyone that’s planning on picking up the ongoing should get this issue as well. It covers all the basics and the need-to-know info so you’ll know what’s going on once the series starts.

Cable #25
Final issue! Usually I don’t get Cable, but this issue has Deadpool in it, and it actually takes place at the beginning of Messiah Complex, when Cable first gets Hope as an infant. This story, by Duane Swierczynski and Paco Medina, does a pretty good job at re-creating the chemistry between Cable and Deadpool as they battle the Purifiers and even a Sentinel while Cable protects Hope. This also happens after the Cable & Deadpool ongoing, but it’s before Deadpool restarting his series, so it’s like Cable & Deadpool issue 51 (the series ended after issue 50). Duane also makes fun of Deadpool having about 14 titles now, so overall I enjoyed this issue for these two being together one more time if nothing else.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1
Okay, first of all, this issue is not for casual reading. You’ll need to pay attention to this in order to follow it (I know I had to, but then again, I’m a Deadpool fan so definitely a different flavor here). It’s by Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver, and even though it’s a Marvel comic, it feels like Hickman back when he was doing independent stuff. It’s a neat idea, instead of SHIELD starting with Nick Fury, this has them originating with Imhotep back in 2620 BC when he was fighting the Brood (!!), continued on to 114 AD with the Han Dynasty and the dealing with a Celestial, to 1495 with Da Vinci, and 1582 with Galileo confronting Galactus. The main story takes place during 1953 and someone name Leonid being taken to Rome, where a quarter mile below Rome is the Immortal City, where the High Council of the Shield reside. They tell Leonid they must join them in protecting the world and he agrees, with his father showing up 3 years later to take him to a part of the building that hasn’t been opened for centuries. This is a must-read for Hickman fans out there, and also for those who want to try a title that’s a little different (okay, a lot different, but in a good way).
