Captain America: The First Avenger - Review

Just got back from this and here are my impressions.

The good:
This was a superbly constructed film! It hit the right beats at the right time. The casting was brilliant with Agent Carter looking like she lept out of 1941 and Lee Jones playing a military leader with pitch perfect precision. Weaving was believably mad but smart as Red Skull and I could go on down the list of actors. Everyone felt like they fit snug in their role.

The action sequences were so much fun to watch. One really got the sensation of danger and violence present on the battlefield and Steve Rogers’ combat style fit within the context. Explosions abound and its a hyper-stimulating feast for the ears and eyes.

I also enjoyed how the cosmic cube was linked to Thor movie mythology. That was a clever add-on which lent a feeling of wholeness to the Avengers franchise-in-the-making. I’m always concerned this will be overdone but so far so good.

The less good:
I had a bit of an issue with shot compositions sometimes when certain elements seemed to obstruct the view of what was the subject of scenes, but it was a very minimal issue. Blame it on 3d?

The fact that this was set in the 40s made the “rah rah rah stay true to your country” flavor of the film a little more palatable. And there is not too little of it. There is enough in fact that I wasn’t sure how comfortable I was with it. The writers lept at the opportunity to place a representative of each American ethnicity in Captain America’s rag tag crew of soldiers. Irish, black, french english, asian. Because after all America is home of the free and land of the brave *wink wink*. And Steve of course, despite being reticent at being a spokesperson for war bonds still went a ahead with it because hey “anything for my country”. Though you could argue that the script provided a balanced counterpoint when “chorus line” cap goes to entertain the troops but is received poorly by the war-worn soldiers in the trenches. But that point was made superficially at best. Relating to this, Steve’s reasons for enlisting in the army were not to kill but rather to stop bullies. I appreciate this sentiment but I doubt anyone in the audience saw this as anything other than a generic oversimplification.

Conclusion:
All that being said, I have to admit that there’s practically no successful way of dealing with this character in an action flick without blazing past some of weightier issues associated with it. So to be honest, this film did just about the best job it could faced with the task it had to accomplish. The film took Captain America from then to now and dealt with its war era roots and ended by displacing him to a more fictional straight-up superhero context.

I was entertained, I was dazzled and I had a good time with this movie. And I’m glad Captain America in the future will probably be more of an international superheroic leader and less of a poster boy for American patriotic sentiment.

July's previews, for September items, is a pretty long list, partly due to DC relaunch of the DCnU with 52 new #1s. On top of these, we'll also see a new Abe Sapien 2 pt mini, a new Annihilators mini, the newest BPRD Hell on Earth mini, the begining of Buffy Season 9, a Game of Thrones ongoing, a Ghostbusters ongoing, a Walking Dead Novel, and so much more! -A new DnA book, bringing back their 90s character. I'm behind them on most anything they do.

Stormwatch #1
-As a big fan of the late 90s Wildstorm Universe, I really hope they do it justice with this new book, now at least partially set in the regular DC Universe (if not fully).

Swamp Thing #1
-His first ongoing in quite a few years and his first in the regular DCU since the 80s. Snyder is on a hot streak lately, let's hope it continues into this.

Walking Dead Novel HC VOL 01 Rise of the Governor
-Walking Dead's first novel, co-written by Kirkman, chronicling the “early” days of The Governor. Might be one of our best sellers of the month and it's not even a comic :-P

Small World Underground Demo + Sale!

This Thursday evening from 6pm to 10pm (recommend showing up 15 min. early to make sure you get in a game) we will be hosting a demo of the new Small World Underground board game from Days of Wonder. Screamland #1

Image, along with Vertigo, is one of the publishers that manage to consistently produce comics (oftentimes with ‘unknown’ writers) that are worth the purchase based on premise alone (Chew, Proof, Morning Glories) ; the first issue of the new Vol.2 series Screamland definitely falls in that category... but it fails to fully showcase the way it should. And though that is a downside, it’s not necessarily a complete downfall.

I didn’t read any of the volume 1 Screamland, but a quick google search tells me it revolved around similar themes and characters. What you need to know is that the cast is made up of down-on-their-luck Hollywood horror actors that actually happen to be actual horror creatures: Carl the Werewolf, Izzy the Invisible man, Tempest the Vampire are just a few.

No longer content to just prowl the Horror conventions, which have since turned into havens for Twilight-esque fans, Carl is trying to get himself back into the business in a big way. There are actually a few panels and some dialogue taking jabs at Twilight and modern sort of ‘tween’ horror, which was definitely a highlight. As he tries to climb back up to the top, Carl enlists his buddy Travis, seemingly just a human sci-fi actor, for moral support but their self-loathing takes over and directs them to the bar circuit (Bar-con, they call it) during these conventions. Carl ends up with a chance to potentially re-enter the limelight, but there’s a catch--it’s not quite going to be via his ‘best work’. Carl attempts to stop this ‘secret’ from coming to light, and as he does we are given the cliffhanger ending.

Screamland has a great cast of characters, an extremely cool premise worthy of purchase alone, and a pretty decent plot. Though the writing is a bit bland, there are definitely a few laughs. Not quite “ha-ha” worthy, but good jabs at Hollywood and modern movie making.

This is all good, but I feel there could be a bit more. With such a great concept, the execution falls just short of ‘engrossing’. The cliffhanger ending is typical, but I feel that Sipe and Sebela are going to put a comical twist on it. This series is definitely worth checking out if you’ve got an aching nostalgia for the old horror flicks or just want a light-hearted, unique concept.

Pros:

-Unique concept, great cast of characters

-Light-hearted read with good accompanying cartoonish art

-Pokes fun at Hollywood

Cons:

-Falls just short of greatness
