JMS leaves Superman & Wonder Woman
The DC blog announced today that JMS will be writing a sequel to the Superman: Earth One graphic novel. In that announcement they also buried the lead that JMS will be leaving both Superman (finishing at 707) and Wonder Woman (605).

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/11/10/breaking-news-superman-earth-one-sequel-in-the-works/
I have three completely different reactions to this news.
- Yay for more Earth One. I want to see more top talent playing in that sandbox, just like the Ultimate universe.
- Boo for an end to Wonder Woman. This is is the most enjoyable WW story I've ever read.
- Thank god he's off Superman. That story has been a train wreck... which is also the reason I'm still reading it. You can't take your eyes off it!

RED – A Movie Review
What do you get when you take four aged action stars and combine them with the roles of four retired (emphasis on retired) black-ops agents? Naturally, a group of retired and extremely dangerous fogies – who (clearly) still have it!
The film is (loosely) based on the three-issue comic book mini-series by Wildstorm in 2003 and 2004 and produced by DC Entertainment. It centers its focus on the main character Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis) who is stuck in retirement from a former black-ops career that somebody has seen fit to (permanately) bury. With no option but to take along a young woman who’s inadvertantly caught up in the mess, Frank’s only option for survival is to connect with three former team-mates who are all connected: the wise Joe Matheson (played by Morgan Freeman), the neurotic Marvin Boggs (played by John Malkovich) and the beautiful Victoria (played by Helen Mirren). Together, they’ll fight for their own survival (and possibly a happy ending) or die trying (and not from old age).
From the get-go, RED is a virtually non-stop action ride with a perfectly even-mixture of action and comedy (with a little romance to top it off) for one of the best action-comedies of 2010.
Without giving away anything more than what the previews show for this film – I’ll focus on the pros and cons of the film with an ultimate rating (being one to five stars).
Pros:
+Constant pace of the film keeps the story flowing evenly, not dragging its feet and making the viewer feel left behind.
+Hardly able to lose the viewer with a clearly pronounced story.
+Plot twists and surprises keep the viewer guessing.
+Willis, Malkovich, Freeman, and Mirren all perform fantastically for their roles: not over-the-top nor under-achieving... completely believeable.
+Steady comedic pace thrown in for just the right timing to eliminate dull moments.
Cons:
-Mary-Louise Parker’s acting seemed very rigid and forced... not natural at all, even for her type of character.
-The odd one-liner oozed with cheesiness... not enough to upset the entire film, but slightly wound fantastic action scenes.
Bottom-line: If you get the chance to see RED and you enjoy either action or comedy (with a little romance) .. do not pass this one up. Released on October 15, 2010, you definitely still have time to catch it in theatres (very recommended!).
4.5 / 5 stars.

Bruce Wayne The Road Home Part II
Bruce Wayne continues down the road home in the last half of the one-shot series which concluded this week. Things switch into a higher gear with more focus on the Vicki Vale story as word leaks out that Vale has learned Batman's secret. Now the Gotham Underground want to get to her any way they can.
Catwoman
This seemed to be mostly a Gotham Vixen's one shot with Bruce still doing his assessment of his extended Bat-family.It was interesting to see Bruce's thoughts on how Selina has been operating (and with whom) during his absence as she and Poison Ivy (with Harley in tow) break up a black market auction. The art is good and the story moves along well giving us equal amounts of action and character insight. 3.5 out of 5 bullets.
Commissioner Gordon
This one-shot was an enjoyable issue. Vicki Vale is now in police protection and its up to Jim Gordon to keep her alive. The art was very sketchy and dark but it really fit the issue. The writing provided a solid lone cop against the odds story intermixed with Bruce's comments on his friend and confidante. The importance of Batman's relationship to Gordon is well spelled out and Bruce's obvious respect for him shines through.
4 out of 5 bullets.
Oracle
The Oracle one-shot took a bit of step back to more traditional tones of the early one shots. We learn who is trying to kill Vale and Bruce needs to call in Oracle and her network to protect her. Lots of solid action and Bruce is impressed with Oracle's deductive abilities as she realizes who he is. The art was serviceable and the story was okay but nothing special.
3.5 out of 5 bullets.
Ra's Al Ghul
Finally, the Ras al Ghul one-shot brings things to the grand finale. Bruce finds out why Ra's is involved in the whole plot to kill Vicki Vale. There were some attempts to give some character
insight on Ra's' personality but I found it rather ineffectual. The issue sort of just ended after he and Bruce had their confrontation without any real satisfaction. It all just leads into Batman Incorporated coming to you next month. Hopefully by then the last issue of Bruce Wayne the Return will be out so we know what started the whole thing!
Overall, the series of one-shots were passable. I think this could have been done in a big special issue a bit more tightly. I enjoyed the Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon issues the most out of the group. Still, Bruce is back and many fans will be happy to have him back in a Bat-suit.

The Walking Dead - A TV premiere review
Who doesn’t like zombies? Well, if you’re like me, anything produced in the last number of years involving zombies that sprint faster than Donnovan Bailey and use guns completely turns you off.
Enter “The Walking Dead”.
It’s my pleasure to undertake the review for the pilot of the biggest (and most anticipated) series of 2010. As most (if not all) of you know, "The Walking Dead" premiered tonight on AMC and has been extremely anticipated since its announcement in August 2009 and aired on Halloween night 2010.
The series is based on the on-going monthly comic “The Walking Dead” published by Image Comics (started 2003) and written by Robert Kirkman. The tv series was developed by Frank Darabont (who has written screenplays for The Green Mile, The Mist, and The Shawshank Redemption) and promises to be very faithful to the comic series.
From the opening scene, there’s a sense of scarcity and lonliness.. a brief look into what’s to come. We’re immediately introduced to Rick and Shane – two partners in local law enforcement in an un-named and non-descript town in the USA. Giving us a glimpse into their personalities, a decent picture is painted before being thrown into the opening introduction of the comic series.
The action for the pilot is played out as most would expect it to be: not missing a beat and not going over-the-top; sticking as true to reality as possible. Realism is at an all-time high for what’s depicted in the show, thus driving the graphic nature up quite a ways for what’s been in a tv series (CSI doesn’t count).
The cinematography and music for this premiere was beautiful, helping to set the scene and tone perfectly for the post-zombie-apocalyptic setting: lonely, drab, and horrific – but including small glimmers of hope. Broad shots of a freeway out from a city completely spell out the panic and franticness of people trying to escape the nightmare, only delaying the innevitable due to complete grid-lock.
Just looking at a few ups and downs should sum things up just nicely.
Pros:
Zombies have one speed: Shamble (kudos to anyone who knows this reference)
Very high character developement potential
Great screenplay
Acting was believeable with real characters.. no over or under-acting.
Cons:
Makeup-effects seemed rushed on a few of the characters and zombies
In all, this pilot has shown that as a series, “The Walking Dead” is VERY promising – and I urge anybody who is any sort of a zombie fan to watch this show from start to finish as the series continues. I know it's certainly changed my opinion of zombie entertainment dramatically.
5.0/5.0 stars
