Weekly News Catch-Up!
This past week has been super busy, with the new Magic: The Gathering set pre-release last weekend, with it going on sale tomorrow meant a lot of work today. The Diamond order was due for Tuesday which meant I worked on it during my days off. All this to say that I haven't kept up with news.
With me leaving tomorrow for vacation time, there won't be much news/updates/shipping lists for a couple of weeks, so I'll just to a catch-up for the last week, and post the bigger news!
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/09/27/the-return-of-transmetropolitan-for-2011-ish
-2011 might see the return of a Transmetropolitan comic. Might just be a collection of stories, but I'll take what I can get! Also, a HC collection of the series has been announced!
-Please "read too much" into this. It's pretty funny!
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=28533
-Way too many Lady Death issues ordered! Feel free to come and get yours next week!

-I linked the Bleeding Cool article, but it's all over every comic site! Bob Harras, former Editor-in-Chief at Marvel (Marvel's "Chapter 11" pre-Quesada era), has been named EIC at DC!

-Image keeps pimping "The End" for Walking Dead. Probably just a ruse, but it's got me curious!
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2010/09/29/christopher-nolan-finally-makes-it-official-hes-directing-batman-3/
-Christopher Nolan has confirmed that he'll be directing the third Batman movie since he relaunch with Batman Begins!

-A Cool little article about some of the "more powerful" names in comics right now.

-Spider-Man: Brand New Day is done. Up next? Spider-Man: Big Time! Twice a month instead of three, but more pages per book, and all being done by the Amazing(ly) fun Dan Slott, and drawn by Humberto Ramos. Very awesome to see Ramos back on a regular book, and this creative team could make this a really great read!

Part 2 of The Wry's Rants/Reviews for Sep 22 (Marvel Artists)
Usually if I have any rants, I add them to the end of my reviews. In this case, I felt that with the length of this rant, not long in itself, would have made a rather large entry if included with the reviews. Hence part 1/part 2 for this week. Of course, any viewpoints/opinions in this rant might not be agreed with by the other people here on the blog, or by Comic Hunter. So let's get to..
The Rant on Marvel artists
Well, I knew this was coming sooner or later. I started noticing it last fall when the highly anticipated (for me) issue of Spider-Man came out with Deadpool starring in it, and was written by Joe Kelly himself. Then I opened it up and saw artwork that looked like I would've done on my off-hand while drunk. It was bad. No, it was HORRIBLE!!! What the hell was this... person... doing drawing on a flagship title?
But it didn't stop there. Spider-Man seemed to be getting drawn by people who had no business doing that title. Now to be fair, the art with the Lizard story worked. It also (kindof) worked with the Kraven story too, but barely. But for the most part it was done by people that I would've expected on Daredevil, not Spider-Man. For the record, the art on Daredevil works, because he's an in-the-dark and not in the daylight type of hero.
It seems that Marvel saves their BIG name artists for the Avengers titles, and with the exception of some, has other titles being done by people that make me scratch my head. Some work I have no problem, like Captain America (which has been working with the same style of art for about 4 years now), and Deadpool (the art is okay, but for Deadpool it's more about the jokes, so for me okay art is fine), and Hulk (the teams just changed, so the jury's still out on the new people). But with Spider-Man and Thunderbolts (just to name one off the top of my head) the art is too inconsistant.
And the X-books? Hit and miss. Up until a few months ago I would have put them in the Avengers category, but lately they seem to be slipping too. Most noticeably is Uncanny, which has had the last couple of issues by Whilce Port-a-pottie. I know it's Portacio, but dammit, his art is crap! Some panels are done well, but some are BAD. He puts an eye in a weird spot on someone's face or does something else that's disproportionate. And the good and bad panels are sometimes on the SAME PAGE! Blarrg, I say.
Now of course there's no way I can mention all 90 Marvel titles and tell which has art that I like and don't like. Some titles that I haven't mentioned here have art that I like. It just that it seems that the number of titles that I'm not liking the art of seem to be increasing, which is a shame considering how many of them have good writers.
While I'm ranting uncontrollably, let me also add that I'm not a fan of having a different artist doing the cover than the artist doing the interior. Especially when the two artists have completely different styles. Wheee! It's like a middle of the week surprise! Only sometimes the surprise is one of pain. Now I do want to say that Marvel isn't the only one that does this. Other companies do it as well (like DC), but it just seems that Marvel does it more often.

The Wry's Rants/Reviews for Sep 22 comics (Part 1: reviews)
What the-? Holy crap it's been, like, forever since I've been here! Pretty much all my fault, of course. With the weeks of me not picking up my stuff, combined with the other weeks when I can't seem to be able to put a rant/review together, it merges into a LONG time since I was last here. So I'll be reviewing four titles in this part, and in part 2 I'll be ranting on something that's been bugging me for a bit, the choice of artists at Marvel.
Fantastic Four #583
It's the countdown to THREE! (Marvel put it in all-caps, so I figured I should as well) It's part one, by Johnathan Hickman and Steve Epting, and it's about little Valeria coming across her dad's Bridge machine while the team's off to the Forever city. She sees what her dad has done with the Bridge and how he came across the Council and turned down their request to have Reed join them. She also thinks about what her future-time brother told her about "all hope lies with Doom". Speaking of Doomsie, it turns out that he's a little brain damaged after being captured by the Intelligencia during World War Hulks, but guess who offers to make him all better? (you'll have to guess, because I'm not sayin')
This issue is great. I was getting a little worried about this title because Hickman seemed to be pulling a Claremont and having about 8 different plots going on with no real resolution happening. But it looks like he's putting at least some of them together, and I gotta say, after the end of this issue, I'm eager for the next. And isn't that really what their goal is?
The Flash #5
Wow, this title comes out about as often as my reviews. (Self Burn!) It's the world's fastest man on the world's slowest title! I've got more, but I'll wait and save them for the next issue when it comes out in 2011. This is by Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul, and it's contining the story of the future renegades trying to catch Flash for a murder he hasn't committed yet. It also has the current rogues that now have to deal with a Barry Allen Flash, some of them for the first time. Plus the rogues and renegades are fighting each other as well, so it's action a-plenty! Be careful though, it seems one of the Renegades is pulling a *ahem* fast one over on the others, which Flash realizes too late! And by too late, I mean on the last page.
Man, I wish the title was more consistant on the releases. It's a good book, with Johns doing his writing goodness. It would've been awesome if Scott Kolins was doing the art, as it's a rogues storyline, but Manapul kindof seems to have the same style, so that's good. A good title, but of course the major problem is it's lateness, which I hope gets fixed.
Secret Avengers #5
Hey! Who's that Nick Fury-like guy in the previous storyarc that was running around with a dragon emblem on his outfit? If you had trouble sleeping at night thinking about that very question, then this issue's for you! It's by Ed Brubaker and 3 Artists (Aja, Lark, and Gaudiano) that seem to be filling in for Mike Deodato, but it's a one issue back-story, so that's fine. This issue talks about how Max came to be (that's the name he gets at the end of the issue, so go with it), why he was a big deal to S.H.I.E.L.D., and how he ended up with the Shadow Council (the dudes with the dragon emblems).
Like I said earlier, this a back story on Max, so one could say that you really don't need to read this issue to keep up. That being said, if you have a casual interest in the title, I would still recommended it as it's going to be a big deal here. The other Avenger titles, not really. But this title, definitely.
Deadpool Team-up #889
The team-ups with B-listers continues, as this month it's with Gorilla-Man, by Jeff Parker and Steve Sanders. (By the way, the monkey with Gorilla-Man and Deadpool on the cover? Not in the story, sorry) Deadpool is hired by a hottie to protect an island against the Gorilla-Man, a vicious beast genetically engineered to kill her! Of course, we all know different, but we must have the "fighting against each other, only to unite against a common foe" storyline. But hey, that actually works in this issue. As with the other team-ups, it's a one issue story, so it has (gasp) a resolution!
Best team-up issue since the first one with Hercules. I also think any fans of Agents of Atlas would like this issue. Gorilla-Man works well with Deadpool, and they play off each other very nicely. It helps that Parker wrote it, since he's the brainchild of the Agents of Atlas, and Gorilla-Man is on the team. I don't suppose Hickman is writing next issue's team-up with the Thing? No? Damn.

Warren Ellis's Warpies!
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/09/24/hes-not-just-bringing-back-the-warpies/
When I read this book this morning, and asked myself "Could it be that Ellis is bringing back characters from Alan Moore's UK run on Captain Britain?" without having actuallly gone back to double check, cause I'm sort of lazy that way. Seems like someone at Bleeding Cool isn't, or has a better memory than I do, because it turns out, he totally is!!!!
Alan Moore and Alan Davis wrote many years of Captain Britain in the UK before Marvel brought him over in to the US in Excalibur in the late 80s, where Alan Davis, now with Chris Claremont, continued his adventures with a handful of ex-X-Men.
I grew up reading Excalibur, but had always been confused over a few characters/stories that, turns out, made reference to some of the Moore stuff that just wasn't available on this side of the Atlantic.. at least not easily.
A couple of years back, Marvel released the Captain Britain Omnibus, which gave me the chance to finally read all those stories, which I read last year during my honeymoon, and totally loved!
And now, Ellis is bringing some of them back, more than 20 years later! His run on Astonishing X-Men has been a little rocky, with a kind of terrible start, while getting better and better, but this last issue has me hooked. Hopefully we get more than 2 more issues out of him....

Wildstorm's Defining Moments!

All-Star Superman Trailer
Released yesterday, here's the first All-Star Superman trailer, due out next Feb.
I've read some mixed reviews, with some people saying that they haven't kept close enough to Quietly's art, or kept to the "theme" of Morrison's story. As far as the former goes, I'm fine with the result. It looks good enough, if not exactly like Quietly. As far as the later goes, it's sort of hard to tell what direction the story will take exactly from a 1min trailer.

The end of Wildstorm (and ZUDA and Milestone)
A bit of sad news for those of you still keeping up with the Wildstorm Universe. Dan DiDio and Jim Lee have announced that they would be closing the door on the Wildstorm Imprint, and all the Wildstorm Universe titles along with it. While I can't say that I've especially ever liked Gen13, I've been following Stormwatch, The Authority and Wildcats under their various titles for a long time, and while we're down to two core books, it's sad to see them go.
Here's the statement issued earlier today.
The changes happening behind the scenes this week are part of a greater campaign to reshape DC Comics and build a company for the future. Our responsibility as Co-Publishers is to find a balance between short term opportunities and long term vision; between our strengths in traditional print formats and the infinite potential beyond print; between our characters’ rich legacies in the past and the bright promise for the future they hold.
As we’ve said before, there’s much to celebrate about DC. The foundation for long-term success is already here.
The DC Universe features the modern adventures of the World’s Greatest Superheroes, as envisioned by an exciting mix of new and fan favorite comic book creators. Vertigo is committed to publishing cutting edge, creator owned comic books and graphic novels by a wide array of creative voices.
One of our first decisions of the Co-Publishers was to up the publication of MAD Magazine from a quarterly periodical to a bimonthly one. In the wake of that decision, the magazine has seen increased sell-through growth. And we’re thrilled that MAD’s brand of madcap humor now stretches across media, with a highly-rated television show on Cartoon Network. The Usual Gangs of Idiots are an important part of this company and pop culture.
As we move forward, we also have to acknowledge the need for change.
After taking the comics scene by storm nearly 20 years ago, the WildStorm Universe titles will end this December. In this soft marketplace, these characters need a break to regroup and redefine what made them once unique and cutting edge. While these will be the final issues published under the WildStorm imprint, it will not be the last we will see of many of these heroes. We, along with Geoff Johns, have a lot of exciting plans for these amazing characters, so stay tuned. Going forward, WildStorm’s licensed titles and kids comics will now be published under the DC banner.
After this week, we will cease to publish new material under the ZUDA banner. The material that was to have been published as part of ZUDA this year will now be published under the DC banner. The official closing of ZUDA ends one chapter of DC’s digital history, but we will continue to find new ways to innovate with digital, incorporating much of the experience and knowledge that ZUDA brought into DC.
We’ll be further expanding our digital initiative and making a lot more news in this space. As part of that transformation, the WildStorm editorial team will undergo a restructuring and be folded into the overall DC Comics Digital team, based in Burbank, which will be led by Jim Lee and John Rood. With nearly two million free downloads and hundreds of thousands of paid downloads, our digital foray is already reaching a new audience worldwide. We could not be more excited by the successful launch of our Digital Publishing products in June, which exceeded all sales forecasts and will be building on our early success with new applications for DC material on all major formats and hardware, partnering with Warner Bros Digital Distribution. It has extremely been rewarding to hear anecdotal stories of lapsed readers returning to the art form and of brick and mortar stores gaining new customers who sampled digital comics.
We remain, as ever, dedicated to working with the greatest creators this industry has to offer, while inspiring generations of creators and readers to embrace this medium that we all love.

Remi's (slightly) Obsessive Reading Log! Week 23
Finally caught up on reading the last year's worth of Justice Society books. Hadn't really read anything from the Willingham/Sturges run. It started off a little slow, but with the Dystopian nazi-controlled future storyline somehow tying all of it together, by the end, I was pretty hooked. Unfortunately, James Robinson still feels very direction-less on his JLA run, including the "The Dark Things" story which crossed over into the JSA.
Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine continues to be one of the best books being published and this issue's "Doom: The Living Planet" splash certainly helped cement that!
