World's Best Podcast: Season 3, Episode 42

We discuss the DC re-launch titles and what we're gonna pick up. Also (BE FOREWARNED!) we discuss the cacophony of complaints about the re-launch and more specifically the costume change of Superman. I want to let anyone know that listens to this podcast if you are really upset about the re-launch, you should maybe not listen to this because we go on a rant (Isaac more than anyone) about why we feel people are taking this too seriously and need to relax. We hope you enjoy it. We did!

http://tinmanfrisbie.podbean.com/2011/06/18/season-3-episode-42/

Jason Patric to Star in FX's Powers!

A unique take on the police procedural, Powers postulates a world in which a pair of homicide detectives (Patric's Christian Walker and Lucy Punch's Deena Pilgrim) who specialize in cases involving people with super powers.

The script is written by Charles H. Eglee (who worked on the first season of The Walking Dead), with Michael Dinner prepared to start shooting in Chicago later this summer. Patric, whose most recent credit is the adaptation of DC's The Losers and who to date has only shot feature films, will be making his television debut with Powers.

As I have just finished the complete (still ongoing) series of Powers I can say I'm intrigued with the casting but super pumped about the show being made!!!!!!!

The Future of the Uncanny X-Men

There's a good interview with Kieron Gillen about the future of Uncanny X-Men post-Schism on NewsaRama.

Seems like Wolverine is going to be taking off with his supporters in the book "Wolverine and the X-Men" with Uncanny X-Men relaunching at #1 following Scott and his supporters, all under the X-Men: Regenesis banner. Jason Aaron will be writing the Wolverine book, which is always great to see! Not sure how much the promo art they've release will reflect the actual division of the teams but they seem to be splitting up the couples as well as the teams!

Check it out here!

May 2011 Sales: DC Market Share Down in First Month of 'Flashpoint'

Diamond Comic Distributor's May 2011 sales figures hit this morning, and DC's week-long reboot news cycle is probably working in their favor here, since they got their butt kicked. How bad? They lost market share. In the first month of Flashpoint. While Marvel was in the second month of Fear Itself. That makes Flashpoint a bust, at least on the starting line. It's only a half-percentage loss of market share for DC, but considering it's a month in which they were launching their big summer event -- and a month in which books like Green Lantern and Batman Incorporated came out -- it's not good news.

DATE DC COMICS MARVEL COMICS (Dollar Share) Notable Events
March 27.34% 42.74% War of the Green Lanterns
April 27.09% 40.14% Fear Itself, Mighty Thor
May 26.68% 42.45% Flashpoint

Even though my personal critical opinion is that Fear Itself is falling kind of limp while Flashpoint is weird and exciting, I can't deny that the inertia of reader interest falls into the camp of the former. Whether this had anything to do with DC's decision to shift from depending on the Direct Market and attack the digital market, I have no idea, although the time period certainly lines up since DC would have gotten initial orders for Flashpoint #1 months ago.

I can't say I'm shocked that an alternate-reality event centering around the Flash, a newly-resurrected lead character of a franchise that's never hit the top ten, didn't set the charts on fire, but I am surprised that DC is betting so much of the farm on it. Marvel's summer event is based on Thor and Captain America, both characters with high-profile movies coming out this summer and years of high-selling comics behind them. The Flash had a crappy TV show in the early '90s and two years of incredibly sporadically published but fairly successful Geoff Johns comics behind him, and before that a four-year publishing trainwreck consisting of switching around the title character of the book, aborted runs, and bad ideas. So at least from a character brand perspective, it's not a huge surprise that Fear Itself rolled Flashpoint in some Zig-Zags and smoked it using its own cardstock cover as filter paper.

I can't imagine that this trend will stop with the introduction of the Flashpoint tie-ins; those are all stand-alone miniseries, while Fear Itself incorporates guaranteed best-selling titles like all four Avengers books, Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men (R.I.P.). Flashpoint has alternate versions of Batman and Wonder Woman; Fear Itself has Iron Man, Colossus and Captain America stuck in desperate, character-changing circumstances.

Once again, the old adage that readers want stories that "matter" proves true; even though Flashpoint will have, as the reboot has attested, unprecedented consequences across the DC Universe line, those won't come until the end of issue #5, and in mysterious circumstances. Previous events, such as Final Crisis -- which barely affected DC at all outside of the Batman line -- certainly didn't help initially convince readers that Flashpoint would be anything other than a quick flash in the pan, especially since all of these figures represent sales that occurred before the reboot announcement.

Nonetheless, it's hard to escape the feeling that DC's thrashing here is anything other than academic considering the reboot, so the timing of the announcements certainly plays into their hands. It's possible that the big announcements and mainstream media attention will turn things around and Flashpoint will thrash Fear Itself next month. I have no idea. But this is more writing on the wall for change, that's for sure.

Comic Reviews

Ruse #1

Writer: Mark Waid

Artist: Mirco Pierfederici

Publisher: Crossgen via Marvel

Ruse is the second title to come out of Crossgen via Marvel, alongside Mike Carey’s Sigil. In a nutshell I suppose it would be: “Sherlock-Holmes-esque” with a bit of sci-fi and fantasy, but I don’t think it’s fair to call it such.

Waid does take a very similar approach though, opening with a crime and then excitingly displays the main characters solving it. It all has the Victorian feel to it, but Waid hams it up a notch. He takes the niche and has a bit of fun with his detective, perhaps more so than Conan-Doyle did with his Holmes. The fabled sleuth Simon Archard is the focal point of the story, but it is made explicit that his ‘sidekick’ Emma Bishop is more formidable than himself.

For an opening issue it is great. We get a good feel for the characters, era, and style that Waid has put across (Pierfederici’s pencils are also great), and we have our typical cliffhanger ending in classic detective fashion. It’s definitely readable, and should the caper span out as nicely throughout the next issues as it has in the first, it’ll be something new and different worth following.

Pros:

-Good character chemistry, witty and clever writing

-Chiseled, shadowy pencils that work well with the era

Cons:

-Potential to peter-out depending on the unfolding of the case

FF #1

Writer: Johnathan Hickman

Artist: Steve Epting

Publisher: Marvel

Johnathan Hickman can do no wrong. If you haven’t figured this out yet, you need to pick up virtually anything he has written and find out for yourself. Personally? His extremely outstanding Secret Warriors has been unequivocally (that’s a lie, he’s got competition from Carey’s X-Men Legacy) the most consistently exciting comic on the shelves. It is a shame it has to end. But do not fret, he has his ink elsewhere: FF for one, and he will have a part in the new Ultimate universe reboot. But as for the issue at hand.

FF now stands for Future Foundation instead of Fantasic Four. After the events of the arc(s) leading up to the name change, the family in blue saw the death of founding member, jokester, and some may say the glue (alongside Grimm) that held the family together: Johnny Storm. With this obviously came a big change. Change in name, change in surroundings and perhaps change in scope. Admittedly I haven’t been a long time reader of Fantastic Four, just a few arcs here and there and the stuff Carey did for the Ultimate Universe, but I don’t think the change is something that will take time getting used to. In just one issue Hickman manages to bring Spiderman in, (which might seem rushed if you didn’t read the precursor issues where Johnny gives his pre-dead blessing to Parker), set the new angle/precedent for the FF, and present them with a very serious worldly AND otherworldly threat. And of course a twist.

Hickman really is a great writer to give the Richards family to. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of grand-scope he comes up with for Reed and how it compares to and/or differs with what he has been doing so damn well with Nick Fury. Both are characters with immense talent, immense responsibility, strict codes of honour and respect, yet both are very different men. Both also have a lot to lose, just in different ways.

Hickman has started FF off on a sensational foot, let’s hope it is smooth sailing ahead.

Pros:

-Grand scope, great ideas

-Large, interesting cast

-Always a good twist

Cons:

-None.

DC Relaunches over 50 titles this Fall

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=32566

I guess Flashpoint is really a big event because by the end of it, DC will be relaunching most of it's lineup! Ending with Flashpoint #5 at the end of August (above), we'll be seeing 13 titles going back to #1 every week in September. Johns is really pushing the envelope with what he's doing at the ol' DCU. While I have a lot of faith in the man, I certainly hope it all pays off!
